“Finnian!” gasped Eleanor, surprised to see the boy hiding in her wagon. She’d had no idea he was there.

“Don’t hurt me, hangman. I was just trying to sneak out of town.” Finnian held a pear in his hand, with a bite taken out of it.

“Your father is looking for you, Finnian,” said Eleanor. “He and your mother are very worried.”

“No, they aren’t. I heard Tom tell you that he wished he never took me in, and I heard you say that you were going to try to find another family for me,” said the boy.

Well, there was no hiding the truth now, since he already knew. Still, Eleanor didn’t feel comfortable speaking about this right now.

“Connor, please, let him go,” said Eleanor.

“Why should I?” asked Connor. “This boy is nothing but trouble.”

“Nay, he’s not. He’s a good boy, just confused, and not sure how to behave,” protested Eleanor, feeling attached to each and every orphan that she’d cared for and placed in homes.

“Were you stealing again?” Connor asked the boy, but Finnian didn’t answer. Next, he looked over to Eleanor. “Was he?” She couldn’t lie to him. If she did and he found out, he’d never speak to her again.

“Yes, he did. From several townspeople and they are not happy,” she reported.

“They blame everything on me, even if I didn’t do it,” cried Finnian. He still looked very scared.

“That’s because, I’ll bet, most of the time you’re responsible for the crimes,” Connor ground out.

“Finnian, go home,” said Eleanor.

“They don’t want me there,” said the boy stubbornly. “I’m going to live in the woods from now on. Or maybe here?” He flashed a quick smile, still holding the pear.

“Like hell you are,” Connor responded, finally releasing the boy. “I have enough mouths to feed and don’t need another one.”

“I can help bring you food,” said Finnian, taking another bite of the fruit.

“I don’t want stolen food.” Connor didn’t sound like he was going to budge with his decision.

“Mayhap it would be better if Finnian stayed here with you until things cooled down in town,” suggested Eleanor. “At least, no one would ever come here to look for him.”

“Over my dead body.” Connor stretched out his arm and pointed in the direction of the road. “Go back home and take the punishment you deserve. Once and for all, you are not staying here.”

“Fine,” said Finnian, finishing off the pear and throwing the core over the side of the wagon. He hopped down and brushed the hay off his clothes. “I’ll go back, because even if no one likes me there, they still like you even less.” With that, he turned and ran from the cottage toward the road.

“Eleanor, we really should get back and collect the girls,” said Raven. “It’s not fair to leave them with the Woods family this long.”

“Aye,” agreed Lark. “Besides, I canna wait to show Florie what I got her.” She pulled the rag doll out from under the hay and picked off a few strands.

“What’s that?” asked Ginevra, coming closer to see it.
